ESS Newsline

When using escalators, it is customary for passengers to stand on one side to allow other users to walk past them. The convention is more likely to be adhered to on longer escalators than in a department store or shopping mall. Which side varies. And it has nothing to do with road rules for driving. On the London Underground and the Washington Metro , and in Hong Kong , one stands on the right; in Singapore and Australia on the left.

A mnemonic for the U.S./British convention is: Stand and Right each have five letters. Walk and Left have four.

What does the Safety Standard say?

ESCALATORS & TRAVELATORS

The Australian Safety standards document, AS 1735.5 covers many issues of building maintenance and installation. Escalators, travelators and people conveyors are only a part. Originally published in 1999 as AS 1735.1, the current version, AS 1735.5, been subjected to many revisions. Most revisions are minor.

The comments and resulting revisions continue.

Strategy

Compliance with safety standards comes down to one question: Replace or Repair?

  • Replace the damaged tread plates. Where a score or razor extends the length of the unit, this option may raise the question of  replacing the whole unit.
  • Remove damaged tread plates and have them repaired offsite.
  • Or ESS can repair the damage in situ.

ESS repairs the damage in situ, without inconveniencing passengers or commerce. ESS services are cost-effective. There is no downtime.

Even if the tread plates, or the whole unit, is replaced, damage will re-occur. Delays raise the possibility of a PIN (Provisional Improvement Notice), or an ordered shutdown.
